It’s been a fruitful journey in UVA where we not only learn from Henny and Tseng Laoshi, but is also a great platform that we learn from other teachers’ experiences and through sharing ideas. I am very thankful that I have the opportunity to be the one here teaching in a different online setting which could help me to reflect and generate more ideas about online teaching. It requires teacher to deliver all the learning materials with clear instructions aside in the learning management system, including general introduction of the course format, study pacing and expectations, specific assignment requirements, course documents place and supplementary materials while well consider the logic that connecting the self-pace study and the synchronous session. The synchronous session should be an interactive session that can engage students with input-flood and pushed output. I advocate the task-based activity design in the lab session where students can apply their learned language in a context and situation, so they are not just learning grammar structure and vocabulary, instead they use the language to communicate, isn’t that the nature of language itself? The task can be designed on the basis of 3 communication modes with the help of elicitation drills (mechanic drills, meaningful drills and communication drills). Detailed planning is crucial for an online class and be sure there is always a Plan B aside in case of the unexpected situations. With the help of technology, we are able to display our teaching materials in a more interactive and effective way, never ever stop being creative! Nothing is impossible.
